My Foray into the Modeling World
I was sitting in a parlor chair at the mercy of my hairdresser when she inquired why I hadn’t yet tried modeling. She insisted that not only did I have the looks, but that I also had the down-to-earth, mature, intelligent, gregarious, charismatic persona to boot, a rare combination. After yet another dose of her encouragement on the subject, I decided, “What the heck? What do I have to lose, right?” I was at the point in my life where I wanted to take up a passionate hobby and it was a toss-up between bartending and modeling. Obviously, I decided to pursue modeling.
The following day, I did some research online and stumbled across the One Model Place web site. I set up a profile with a single portrait snapshot, telling myself that this would only be for fun. I had no idea what would come of it. To my astonishment, I received an overwhelming wave of emails from several photographers complimenting my exotic beauty, and inquiring if I’d like to shoot with them. I hurriedly gave myself a crash course about modeling - learning the various terms by utilizing all of the resources on OMP.
I began setting up shoots with numerous photographers, becoming more comfortable in front of the camera, learning how to pose, experimenting with different ensembles and accessories. As the months progressed, so did my experience and confidence as my portfolio continued to expand with new images. I started exploring other possibilities like working with other models and makeup artists. I even briefly dipped my feet into the import scene and worked at a couple of tradeshows.
For a few months, I took a break from modeling to deal with some personal matters. Now I’m back in business! (Yay!) I’ve recently added promotional modeling to my resume. I am also currently working with a few agencies to acquire print/commercial work. Ultimately, that’s the direction I want to take with my modeling career.
Over 3 years have passed since I first set foot into the modeling industry and although I’ve learned a great deal, I still feel that I have so much more to learn about the ins and outs of the business. I’ve met a lot of great contacts and photographers who have helped me along the way, believed in me, and/or continue to be influential to my success.
Modeling is fun, but it’s a lot of work. I know I’m not the first to clarify the rumor that it’s not all glitz and glamour. It’s what I do, but it doesn’t fully define WHO I am. I plan to pursue this to as far as it will take me so keep on the lookout for what’s to come and remember the name, “Summer Alexis!” |
